Onyanserat med Trigger Happy Tv

Dom Joly

Så jag fortsätter mitt korståg gällande mina hjältar. Här är mitt samtal med Trigger Happy Tv´s skapare och komiska geni Dom Joly;

HELLO!

- God dag.

What are you doing right now?

- Eating lunch- lemon chicken, rice and petit pois…

How does a day in the Dom Joly life look like?

- Every day is different that’s what I love- tonight I’m going to the BBC general election party, tomorrow I’m going to my daughter’s rounders game, Saturday, I’m spending all day re-writing my screenplay.

Tell me about your life story.

- I was a journalist first and then fell into comedy after getting a job on a satirical comedy show as a political researcher- first day I drove a tank through a McDonalds drive thru- then I worked on Paramount Comedy Channel and spent a year with Sam Cadman making weird little things for in between shows- that´s where we learned what was good and what was bad- when Channel 4 came looking, we were ready.

How did Trigger happy tv come about?

- We just started filming things that made us laugh- we were lucky that cameras had just got so good that we could buy one for a grand that was good enough to show on telly. this meant that we didn’t need ”professional” crews, we were on our own, TV punks.

The format of trigger happy is a classic hidden camera show, but in my humble opinion it´s you that make it great. You are brilliant.

- Not really a question but thank you.

How much material do end up in the show?

- About twenty percent of what we shot got shown.

Has it ever turned ugly?

- I try not to make people angry, I want them confused. I was attacked by a nun once when I was doing the sketch in the supermarket with the tannoy announcing that somebody was shoplifting…

Will there be any more Trigger happy tv?

- No, but we are maybe doing a hidden camera show in States this year.

Would you call your humour typical British?

- No, I think mine is actually quite European- i grew up in a french speaking country- i think i have more surrealist tendencies than the average Brit.

What is British humour?

- Normally it’s men dressed as women- at it’s best it’s a mixture of surrealism and sarcasm.

Do you know Swedish humour?

- I’m aware of the groundbreaking work of the Swedish Chef in the The Muppet Show, apart from that… no.

So ”Stefan and Krister” doesn´t ring a bell?

- No. But they sound like a pair of gay life-coaches.

Tell me about your new book ”The dark tourist”.

- It´s put out in September and it´s me going on holiday to weird countries like North Korea, Iran (skiing) weekend in Chernobyl…

Were you ever afraid?

- I was nervous in Chernobyl when the Geiger counter was beeping like a bastard.

Would you comeback to any of the ”dangerous” countries you visited?

- All of them- they were all great.

Short Q and A:

Favourite Tv program: Curb Your Enthusiasm

Least Tv program: Any soap opera

Favourite tv personality: I hate personalities

Least Favourite tv personality: Most of them

Most underrated tv program: World Shut Your Mouth

Most Overated Tv program: The Office

Tell me your best pun: I can’t pun, it’s a medical condition

Dom, before we end this interview I have a final question;

Do you like Romantic Comedies?

- No.

So you haven´t seen a movie called ”the Dogtrick”?

- No.

Okay, I will send you a copy of a brilliantly written and directed movie.

- AHA, I have fallen into your cunning trap!
